[make a panther purr is a monthly series, where I spotlight, something that I’m digging and makes the panther in me purrr] Last spring I made a drive to Detroit to check out a show that Jessica Care More has been putting on for a while now called Black Women Rock.  What drew me was the tribute to Betty Davis.  No folks, not the actress — I feel like I have to say that, but lately...

Obeah Opera: I Remember.
It was quite lofty of me to think that I could do a daily update of the goings on of the Obeah Opera rehearsal process…quite lofty.   I should know.   With any theatrical rehearsal process, it’s a process…and it’s a draining process.  It pulls you into places that you are open to and, if it’s doing proper work it’ll drag you into places you’re resistant...

Whitney, You're Home.
It’s not quite sinking in. Yes, I know what the headlines say — I see them.  Yes and I heard her voice on every radio station.  I even saw Jennifer Hudson’s tribute on YouTube.  And the profile pic changes on facebook, don’t think I don’t see them, but it’s still not sinking in.   Am I in denial?  I don’t think so, I think I’m just numb.  I mean,...

Obeah Opera: Breaking To The Other Side
Day one has come and gone, and what a difference five days make. We’re still stumbling through, things are still unclear, but we’ve got a beginning and ending — that’s clear. What’s also clear is that I’m tired — between trying make time for family/friends time and easing my way back into theatre mode — it’s a different muscle. Not to...

Thankful for the Depth of Etta.
I’d like to say a deep thanks to this lady — her honest and raw sincerity on every song that she ever touched, including this album that my sister and I used to play over and over again.  Yes, we’ll be inundated with ‘At Last,’ and probably ‘I’d Rather Go Blind,’ so I decided to offer another side of Etta that I loved so.   She, along with my...

[make a panther purr is a monthly series, where I spotlight, something that I’m digging and makes the panther in me purrr] If you know me, you’ll know that I’m a bit of a health junkie.  I looooove good food, but more good for you food.  I’ll get up on my pulpit and preach about the different foods that are good for you and what you should try.  Cleanses, raw food,...

What's Your Revolution?
Last year, I helped write this song, which ended up in the Chevrolet VOLT commercial.  Now the entire track is making it’s way across the Canadian airwaves — from Whitehorse to Quebec to St John’s to Victoria.  And if you haven’t heard it, call in to your favourite radio station and ask them to play it!   Now for the gooood stuff! For a limited time, I’m giving...

Honey Jam.
February 3rd, some phenomenal ladies will be taking the stage to pay homage to an iconic Black female artist that has been a major influence on them and a taste of who they are, in Honey Jam’s Then & Now show happening at Harbourfront.  I’m excited to be one of those ladies, along with the solRawkestra, of course. Some of the other ladies involved are:  Kim Davis, Kellylee...

I See London, I See France
We’re baaaaaack! And we had a blast!   Unlike earlier this year when we went to Cannes (southern France), this time we stuck to northern France, travelling eastward to Besançon and Mulhouse(close to Switzerland and Germany) and westward to Rennes (by the English channel). We stayed in a beautiful chateau in Chavenay for two days (about 40 minutes outside of Paris) and took a trip to Paris on...

Balumpa: * Interview of Saidah Baba Talibah * →
balumpa: Saidah Baba Talibah is one of my best surprise : she totally rocked the scene at Rennes. Yes, I already have her music in my iPod (for those who wondered : I bought it). Oh and she’s from Toronto so it’s one more reason for fell in love with her sound (I’ve family overthere and I’m chauvinist)…
